The Justice Department has just announced the indictment of 30 individuals in connection with a protest against ICE at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. This brings the total number of charged individuals to 39, including CNN journalist Don Lemon. The protest, which took place in January, was sparked by the Trump administration's immigration policies and the controversial actions of ICE. Demonstrators entered the Cities Church, claiming its pastor worked for ICE, and tensions escalated as protests grew in Minneapolis. The tragic shooting of two Americans by immigration officers further fueled criticism and led to a reevaluation of the Trump administration's approach. Interestingly, a federal magistrate judge initially found that the Trump administration lacked probable cause to arrest Lemon and others under a specific federal statute, which had never been used in a church protest context before. However, a federal grand jury later indicted Lemon and eight others on charges of conspiracy against religious freedom and interference with religious practices. Lemon, pleading not guilty, emphasized the broader implications for journalists and religious freedom in the United States. The case is now under the watch of the Civil Rights Division, with a former Republican congressional candidate, Orlando Sonza, involved. A church member has also filed a lawsuit, alleging that the protest disrupted the service and was part of a coordinated political demonstration.
