A British architect has taken home the world's most prestigious architecture award, and his name is John Simpson. This renowned designer and urban planner has been recognized for his unwavering commitment to traditional architectural styles and urban planning, earning him the prestigious Driehaus Prize in Architecture.
The Driehaus Prize, backed by the Driehaus Trust and awarded by the University of Notre Dame, comes with a substantial cash prize of $200,000, making it the largest monetary award in the field of architecture. Simpson's selection was based on his remarkable contributions to the New Classical movement, where contemporary architects draw inspiration from classical styles. His notable works include the Royal College of Music in London, a master plan for the iconic St. Paul's Cathedral area, and a museum at Kensington Palace, which was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II herself during her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Stefanos Polyzoides, Dean of Notre Dame's School of Architecture, highlighted Simpson's belief that traditional architectural forms are not only environmentally sustainable but also contribute to a sense of local identity. Polyzoides, who led the jury, said, "John Simpson has long been an advocate for the environmental and cultural benefits of traditional architecture."
In addition to Simpson, French architect Philippe Villeneuve will receive the 2026 Henry Hope Reed Award from the university, with a cash prize of $50,000. Villeneuve, a specialist in historic monument conservation and restoration, was chosen for his visionary leadership in the restoration of the iconic Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris after the devastating fire in 2019. The landmark cathedral was reopened to the public in late 2024.
The jury praised Villeneuve for his commitment to rebuilding Notre-Dame de Paris using its original construction methods and restoring it to its original form.
The Richard H. Driehaus Prize is an annual award presented by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, recognizing the year's most outstanding architectural achievements. The award is named after the founder of Driehaus Capital Management and will be presented at a ceremony on March 21st at 11 a.m. at the Driehaus Museum in Chicago.
Following the ceremony, there will be a special tribute to Léon Krier, the "godfather of the New Urbanism movement" and the first Driehaus Prize laureate in 2003. Krier, who passed away in June 2025 at the age of 79, will be remembered for his influential contributions to the field of urban planning and architecture.
