A bold statement from Denmark's top Arctic commander has challenged the narrative of an imminent threat to Greenland from Russia and China. Major General Søren Andersen, in an interview with Axel SpringerGlobalReportersNetwork, has pushed back against the claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
"We are not witnessing an immediate threat from China or Russia at this moment," Andersen asserted. "However, we must remain vigilant and prepare for potential future challenges. That's the purpose of our training exercises."
Andersen, who has led Denmark's Joint Arctic Command since 2023, emphasized that the increased military activity around Greenland is a precautionary measure, not a reaction to an immediate danger. He believes that once the war in Ukraine concludes, Russia may reallocate its military resources to other regions, including the Baltic Sea and the Arctic.
This assessment has guided Denmark's decision to expand military exercises and invite European allies to train under Greenland's harsh winter conditions. The operation, named Arctic Endurance, involves troops from several European countries and includes air, maritime, and land components.
Trump's claims that Greenland is under active pressure from Russia and China and his insistence on its strategic importance to U.S. national security stand in stark contrast to Andersen's remarks. Trump has even suggested the use of force to secure U.S. interests, a statement that has caused concern among Danish and Greenlandic leaders.
Andersen, however, chose to focus on NATO unity and the longstanding cooperation with U.S. forces stationed at Pituffik Space Base. He rejected hypothetical scenarios of conflict between allies, stating that he could not envision such a situation.
Despite political tensions with Washington, Andersen emphasized that the United States was formally invited to participate in the Arctic Endurance exercise. He expressed his hope for a collaborative effort, bringing together U.S., German, French, Canadian, and other allied forces to train together.
"We must work together to ensure the security and stability of our region," Andersen concluded.
