Get ready for a wild ride with Jimmy and Stiggs, a horror film that promises to be a unique and, well, let's just say, an interesting experience! But here's the catch: it might just put you to sleep!
This DayGlo-tinted, heavy metal-infused horror flick aims to shock and awe with its over-the-top gore and shaky cam effects. However, the bright orange 'blood' and the fake-looking alien creatures fail to deliver the intended impact. Instead of being grossed out, viewers are left feeling bored and with a pounding headache. It's like watching a never-ending, dull slasher film with a twist of sci-fi.
The film, crafted over several years in a single seedy apartment, is the brainchild of Joe Begos, who also stars as Jimmy. Begos, along with his lifelong friend Matt Mercer (Stiggs), has made a series of horror films, and we get a glimpse of these through fictional trailers at the beginning - a high point that sadly doesn't last.
As the story unfolds, Jimmy's career takes a nosedive, and he finds himself in a grungy apartment, indulging in alcohol and drugs. His pad, with its cool jellyfish tank and black-light ambiance, feels like a teenager's fantasy escape. Then, aliens invade, and Jimmy must fight back, questioning if he's been mind-controlled. Luckily, alcohol is the aliens' kryptonite, and Jimmy has plenty of that! Stiggs joins the fight but is hesitant to prove his humanity by drinking whisky, having been sober for six months.
You can't help but wonder if this film is a subtle dig at sobriety programs, but if so, it's a miss.
So, should you pack your pillow and painkillers for this one? You decide!
Jimmy and Stiggs is available on digital platforms from 16 February. What are your thoughts? Is this a unique take on the horror genre, or just a dull, headache-inducing mess? Let's discuss in the comments!
