Ohio State's recruitment drive just got a major boost with the addition of cornerback Dominick Kelly, a transfer from Georgia. This move comes hot on the heels of another cornerback signing, Cam Calhoun, formerly of Alabama.
Ohio State has been on a recruitment spree, adding not just Kelly and Calhoun, but also Ja'Kobi Jackson, a running back from Florida, all within a single day. This trio of transfers is a significant boost to the Buckeyes' roster.
But here's where it gets interesting. Kelly, a true freshman at Georgia, had a promising start with 61 snaps in his first collegiate season. However, his time with the Bulldogs may have been cut short, as Georgia recently added two defensive backs from the transfer portal, potentially prompting Kelly's decision to seek a new team.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Kelly brings valuable experience to Ohio State. He played in 10 games this season, making three tackles and recording three pass deflections. While he may not be an immediate starter, Kelly could provide depth and develop into a key player for the Buckeyes.
At 6'1" and 190 pounds, Kelly fits the mold of an outside cornerback, but can also play inside if needed. His overall grade of 58.2, with a run defense grade of 63.2 and a coverage grade of 57.3, according to Pro Football Focus, showcases his potential.
"Staying level-headed is key to success at this position," Kelly told Dawgs247 at Sugar Bowl Media Day. "Experiencing both the highs and lows teaches you valuable lessons about the game."
Kelly will have the opportunity to learn from experienced cornerbacks Jermaine Mathews and Calhoun, as well as Devin Sanchez, who is expected to start at one of the outside cornerback positions next season. This mentorship could be crucial in Kelly's development.
Ohio State's transfer portal additions this offseason now total 15, including tight end Mason Williams, long snapper Dalton Riggs, and several other key players. Kelly's high school ranking as the No. 374 prospect nationally and the No. 38 cornerback in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, further highlights his potential.
And this is the part most people miss: Kelly reclassified from the 2026 class to the 2025 cycle, giving him a head start on his college career. A bold move, indeed.
So, what do you think? Is Ohio State's recruitment strategy paying off? Will Kelly make a significant impact on the team? Let's discuss in the comments!
