Hawaii has lost a true architectural pioneer. Francis S. Oda, a renowned architect and design leader, has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has forever transformed Hawaii's architectural landscape.
Oda's journey began in 1971 when he co-founded G70, a design firm that would go on to receive over 50 awards for its innovative and impactful work. Among his notable projects are the iconic Four Seasons Lodge at Koele and the Four Seasons Manele Bay Hotel, which have become synonymous with Hawaii's luxurious hospitality.
But here's where it gets controversial... Oda's influence extended beyond these renowned resorts. He played a pivotal role in shaping the master plans and design guidelines for significant developments across Hawaii. From the City of Kapolei to the University of Hawaii's Long Range Development Program, Oda's vision left an indelible mark on the state's urban and educational landscapes.
And this is the part most people miss... Oda's impact wasn't confined to Hawaii alone. He worked on projects in French Polynesia, Mauritius, and British Columbia, showcasing his global reach and recognition. His design for Our Divine Savior Church in Chico, California, earned him the prestigious American Institute of Architects Honor Award.
Educator and Mentor
Oda's academic credentials were equally impressive. He earned a Bachelor's in Architecture from Cornell University and a Doctor of Architecture from the University of Hawaii. His commitment to education didn't end there; he served as an adjunct associate professor and played a key role in developing the university's Doctor of Architecture program.
A Mentor and Spiritual Guide
Linda Miki, CEO of G70, described Oda as more than just a colleague. "He was a mentor, a spiritual father, and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of working with him." Oda's influence extended beyond the design studio, as he also served as a senior pastor and board chair of New Life Church Honolulu.

A celebration of Oda's life will be held at First Assembly of God - Red Hill, Moanalua, on April 25th. This event will provide an opportunity for those whose lives he touched to come together and honor his memory.
